The craze on social media where everyone finger-flutters immediately after sitting through a motion picture feature is alarming. We all have opinions about the pictures we have beheld, the rightness and wrongness of certain aspects of the film (as it should be), but we also mentally conjure up pointers for the filmmakers as the ‘fix’ for the inherent issues we stack, which we all but insist are what would make the film a masterpiece. Then boom! We are writing and posting about it, garnering conversations, creating spoilers, and steering unsuspecting online friends and followers toward our curated aperture that shows the many things that are disappointing in the film. While art is perceptive and the input of the third eye is valuable to creating compelling onscreen visuals, the critic of film art requires prerequisites. It is mandatory.
A film critic evaluates a movie by structurally analysing the production. This includes looking at the film as a whole or focusing on certain parts of it to appraise the art, possibly outlining the areas that need enhancements or modifications. After all, there is always room for improvement in the world of art. So, by all means, critique away. Film critiques are created for and directed at filmmakers to help them make better choices in the future, but why should a filmmaker take your assessment seriously? What qualifies you as a film critic?
Film critiquing requires the acquisition of a wealth of knowledge of filmmaking – theory and practice. Suffice it to say that our ideas of what a film needs to be better are just that – ideas. Film critiquing, however, is laced with facts. It requires a cultural, historical, and practical analysis of the rudiments of filmmaking vis-à-vis the production you are discussing. This means that you are aware of how the picture ought to look because you have seen one (or a thousand) that look better, you have been trained on the processes of better filmmaking and can spot and fix the loopholes, or you are well-versed in film language because you have consumed the literature. So, we all cannot be film critics now, can we?

Nollywood has come a long way. Since 2002 when the portmanteau (consisting of Nigeria and Hollywood) was casually coined in a New York Times magazine feature by Matt Steinglass (or was it Charles Igwe? The jury is still out on that one), the industry keeps reinventing itself. Nollywood is saturated with independent filmmakers who largely perceive filmmaking first as a business and then as an art. The ultimate goal is to be able to make another production. Unlike Hollywood where within history lies the role of big (and not so big) corporations and vertical integration in the figurative opening and shutting of filmmaking gates, decidedly choosing who participates and as what in the creative world, Nollywood has always been an all-comers affair. The film industry allows everyone to express their creative abilities. This is a fundamental reason for the overflowing influx of a variety of colourations of films in the movie sphere. Hence, if we are going to evaluate a Nollywood production, we must be armed with the knowledge of where it came from, where we are, and where we are headed. This does not mean that you should go easy. Nollywood filmmakers have thicker skin than you can imagine.
Anyone can create a blog or social media handle and spew words about how a film production does not measure up, but true critiquing is much more. It is not enough to say a production decision or output is bad. It is as much your duty to proffer specific and applicable solutions and the means to achieve them to the issues that you pinpoint as it is your right to identify snags. If you are convinced that a technique or its application is lacking or poorly done, you must illustrate the better way.
Furthermore, film critiquing is an intentional act. Noticing a few hitches that you stumble upon while you are watching a film for entertainment does not qualify you as a film critic. Critiquing film is in itself an art that demands time, care, and intentionality. The intent to watch the film must be clear – to critique the film. This entails carefully watching the film multiple times, paying rapt attention to the specifics as they fit into the spectrum of your interests and specialisation.
The inflow of productions in the Nollywood movie sphere necessitates the proliferation of an army of film critics but this does not mean that we are all qualified to critique films. Even if filmmaking in Nollywood appears to be all-accommodating, film critiquing is not. Moreover, while you can learn on the job as a filmmaker, to be a film critic, you must first be armed with knowledge of the rudiments of film in general and a ‘wood’ in particular. The quest for likes and engagements on social media is not a reason to venture into film critiquing. If we critique film as a joke, it not only waters down the value of Nollywood as a film industry but makes the entire filmmaking profession laughable. Do you want to be a film critic? Learn the art of filmmaking and/or the language of film otherwise, grab a popcorn and watch the production to be entertained.
Over the times it is not enough to say Nollywood films are perfect because flaws tend to happen when it comes to Film making and that why there are film critic in the Film industry who evaluate films and not being too sentimental and judgemental but correct and list the mistakes for the betterment of film making.
This Article has broaden and engross our mindset of being a film critic and i highly commend Dr Belema chris on this article. Over time it is still not enough to say Nollywood films are perfect and that why there are film critic to tell the flaws of film making and also to evaluate film making and not been sentimental or too judgemental.
This article broadens and engross our mindset to what film critic is all about and i highly appreciate Dr Belema Theresa chris. A Film critic should never be on the favourable likes on social media trying to cover up under the eagle of being a Film critic because that does not qualify a film critic but just a person trying to get attention from social media fame, It not a news anymore that certain persons involve themselves into this act and forgetting that a film critic build around film Aesthetics and Art and being a Film critic involves so much effort and studying of film in knowing the principles and guidelines in being an effective Film critic.
The provided text is an exploration of film critique within the context of the Nollywood industry, blending aesthetic appreciation with theoretical analysis. While it draws inspiration from Aristotle’s Poetics, it delves into the realms of dramaturgy and poetics to offer insights into improving film quality. However, it could benefit from a more technical approach, considering aspects such as mise en scene, mise en camera, and sound. Furthermore, the application of theories like semiotics, narratology, and psychoanalysis would enrich the critique. The article’s solutions to industry challenges are seen as basic, suggesting a need for deeper examination of filmmaking minutiae in Nollywood. To address these issues effectively, a collaborative model involving both academics and practitioners is proposed, with practitioners offering industry insight and academics contributing theoretical expertise. Encouraging practitioners to engage in academia could help bridge the gap between theory and practice, ultimately leading to the production of higher-quality films. Overall, the article provides an overview rather than a clear solution to the industry’s challenges.

SO YOU THINK YOU ARE A FILM CRITIC?THE AUDACITY!
The immediate finger-fluttering on social media after watching a movie can be alarming because it suggests a lack of reflection and digestion of the film’s themes and messages. It indicates a rush to form opinions without allowing time for deeper analysis or appreciation of the cinematic experience.
While not everyone can be a professional film critic, anyone with a passion for film can develop the skills and knowledge needed to analyze and critique films effectively. It’s about honing your understanding of filmmaking techniques, storytelling, and cultural context to offer insightful perspectives on a film’s strengths and weaknesses. It’s a blend of subjective opinion and objective analysis, requiring a deep
appreciation for the art form and its nuances. So, while not everyone may become a film critic, anyone can certainly engage in thoughtful film critique with dedication and study.
As a film critic, the qualifications stem from a deep understanding and appreciation of cinema, including its history, techniques, and cultural significance. I’ve likely studied film theory, criticism, and have developed a discerning eye for analyzing and interpreting movies.
My assessments are grounded in objective observations, backed by subjective insights that resonate with a broad audience. Filmmakers should take this assessment seriously because it offers constructive feedback aimed at improving their craft and resonating with audiences. Additionally, a seasoned critic’s perspective can provide valuable insights into how a film may be received by the public and industry peers.

According to Dr. Belema Theresa Chris-Biriowu’s Article SO YOU THINK YOU ARE A FILM CRITIC?THE AUDACITY!
It is important to note that being a film critic is not limited to these qualities alone, as individual perspectives and personal taste also play a significant role. Different critics may have their own unique perspectives and criteria for evaluating films.
You’re absolutely right! Film critiquing is indeed a specialized skill that requires a deep understanding of filmmaking theory, practical experience, and a broader knowledge of film culture and history. It’s not just about personal opinions or subjective preferences; it involves a factual analysis of the technical and artistic aspects of a film. While anyone can share their thoughts and impressions about a movie, being a film critic requires a more in-depth understanding and expertise in identifying and evaluating the various elements that contribute to the overall quality of a film. So, while we can all appreciate and enjoy movies, not everyone can be a film critic without the necessary knowledge and expertise in the field.
Indeed, being a film critic requires more than just casually noticing flaws while watching a film for entertainment. It is an art that demands dedicated time, care, and intentionality. The purpose of watching a film should be clear – to critique it. This involves watching the film multiple times with a keen focus on specific details that align with one’s interests and specialization.
The abundance of productions in the Nollywood movie sphere may lead to the need for a larger number of film critics. However, it is important to recognize that not everyone is qualified to critique films, despite the inclusivity of filmmaking in Nollywood. To be a film critic, it is crucial to have a firm grasp of the fundamentals of film in general, as well as the specific aspects of Nollywood. While filmmakers can learn on the job, being a film critic requires prior knowledge and understanding. It is not valid to venture into film critiquing solely for the purpose of gaining social media likes and engagements. If films are critiqued in a frivolous manner, it not only devalues the Nollywood film industry but also undermines the integrity of the entire filmmaking profession.
If one aspires to be a film critic, it is advisable to learn the art of filmmaking and familiarize oneself with the language of film. This foundation will enhance the ability to provide insightful and meaningful critiques. Alternatively, for those who simply want to enjoy films, grabbing a popcorn and watching productions for entertainment can be a delightful experience.
SO, YOU THINK YOU’RE A FILM CRITIC? THE AUDACITY.
Reading vividly through this article by Dr. Belema Theresa, I will like to drive myself to the aspect of having a knowledge of what this is really is.
A rhetoric (SO, YOU THINK YOU’RE A FILM CRITIC) is thrown to the space seeking to conceptualise on what could have steam the move of people on the media space after having a sit for the shadow on the motion picture. To this effect, we discover how people spit out words on the media space as to the disappointment they had in course of expecting something captivating after seeing a movie.
Well, as people who are knowledgeable in the art of film, we ponder on what audacity that qualifies them to fish out the wrongness of a production and pointing hand to the filmmaker as the atom of this flaw.
So if I must ask myself, does this article falls under the theoretical aspects?
Looking it from the vista of theory, we have to note that in the process of criticising a film, evaluations must come in and also the proper analysis of the film must come in. And for you to successfully do this, you must have a wealth of knowledge on what filmmaking is. And you must also look at the cultural, historical and practical rudiments of the film
Also in the process of film criticism, you must honourably consider the mood that the movie creates in the mind of the viewers. This is where the aesthetic part of it comes in.
So, have you seen why you are not a film critic (The society in general)?
The article “ So you think you’re a film critic by Dr Belema extensively explains what it truly means to be a film critic, it entails the meaning of a film critic, what a film critic is not and the roles of film critics to film directors and film makers otherwise producers .
However i will say that the article is mostly related to the theory aspect of film and not aesthetic for these reasons: Film theory focuses on the critical analysis and interpretation of films which involves examining various aspects of film making and understanding their artistic, cultural, historical and social significance, Dr Belema in this article examines a film critic as a person who evaluates and analysis’ film, knowledgeable in the art form, analyse the culture and the history of film making in a particular region ( where she highlights the the history of Nollywood.
On the other hand, Film aesthetics refers to the visual and auditory elements that contribute to the overall look and feel of a film, it collaborates the aspects of cinematography, lighting, set design, costume design and sound design. We can see that this aspect of film is not mentioned in the article but seen as a crucial aspect of film making.
Moreover, in my opinion i think a film critic shouldn’t be restricted to just the evaluation and analysis of film, it’s culture and history but should also include the international knowledge and analysis of these visual and auditory elements ( Aesthetics) that creates the mood and beautifies the film thank you.
This article by Dr Belen’s talks about the theory aspect of film criticism and the seriousness required in the nollywood industry and also about how film critiquing requires the acquisition of wealth of knowledge and of film making.Dr Belema made a statement of how a film critic evaluated a movie by structurally analyzing the production

This article” SO YOU THINK YOU ARE A CRITIC “ by DR. BELEMA THEREMA CHRIS BIRIOWU
Is in the theory aspect, and also in the aesthetic, as you have indeptly given an explanation to what being a film critique is all about.
Furthermore, i will add by saying, in other to understand film as an artistic medium and to proffer solution to the problems, A film critique should critically analyze film with its rules not because you just want to talk or type to create content .
However film aesthetics are essential because they help to create mood and convey emotions, so far while it comes to aesthetics I don’t think nollywood film makers are doing any bad, because their cameras, color grading and motion pictures are good.

The aesthetic aspect in film making is crucial in shaping the overall visual and emotional experience for the audience. It made up of different elements like cinematography, set design, lighting, colour palette, composition, costume design and visual effects. These elements help film critics in their evaluation of the film,to uncover deeper meanings in films, its artistic merits and provide insights for the directors choices and it’s impact on the society and culture.
Apart from the skills and qualifications mentioned earlier, there are a few more aspects that can qualify someone as a film critic. Here are some additional qualities that filmmakers may consider when taking a critic’s assessment seriously:
1. Knowledge and Understanding: A film critic should have a broad knowledge of various film genres, styles, and techniques. They should be well-versed in film theory, history, and the cultural context surrounding movies. This depth of knowledge allows them to evaluate a film within a larger cinematic landscape and provide a nuanced critique.
2. Objectivity: While personal preferences are inevitable, a good film critic strives to maintain objectivity in their assessment. They can separate their personal biases and preferences from analyzing the film’s technical aspects, storytelling, performances, and other elements that contribute to its overall quality.
3. Consistency and Fairness: A trustworthy film critic is consistent in their reviews and evaluations. They should apply similar criteria and standards to different films, providing a fair and unbiased assessment. Filmmakers are more likely to take a critic seriously if they can see a consistent and fair approach in their work.

This includes considering the director’s body of work, the film’s intended audience, its cultural relevance, and current societal trends. 5. Engaging and Insightful Writing: A well-crafted film review is not just a summary or a list of likes and dislikes. A film critic should be able to engage their readers through their writing style, offering insightful analysis and interpretation of the film’s themes, symbolism, and artistic choices. This helps filmmakers understand the critic’s perspective and consider their feedback more seriously.
Overall, a film critic’s qualifications extend beyond mere opinions. It involves a combination of expertise, knowledge, objectivity, consistency, fairness, contextualization
Film critiquing is indeed an intentional act that requires careful observation and analysis. Simply noticing a few flaws while watching a film for entertainment does not automatically make someone a film critic. To effectively critique a film, one must dedicate time, attention, and intentionality to the process. This involves watching the film multiple times, paying close attention to details, and examining how they relate to one’s interests and specialization.
The Nollywood movie industry, like any other, may generate the need for a wide range of film critics. However, it’s important to note that not everyone is qualified to critique films, even in a thriving industry like Nollywood. While filmmaking in Nollywood may seem inclusive, film critiquing requires a foundation of knowledge about the fundamental aspects of film, both in general and within a specific industry like Nollywood. Engaging in film critiquing solely for the purpose of gaining social media likes and engagements is not a valid reason. Treating film critiquing as a joke not only diminishes the value of the Nollywood film industry but also undermines the entire filmmaking profession.
If you have a genuine interest in becoming a film critic, it is advisable to learn about the art of filmmaking and familiarize yourself with the language of film. This will provide a solid foundation for effective film critiquing. Otherwise, you can simply enjoy watching films for entertainment purposes.

The write-up is largely aesthetic and characterises literature in an attempt to offer a critique of film. However, it has bits of the theory aspect because it leans towards a theoretical analysis of the problem rather than the widely known emotional review of the usual film critiques. The author touches on the dramaturgy and poetics as he sought to contribute towards improving the quality of the Nollywood film industry. He alludes to Aristotle’s Poetics as he talks about plot, scene, and characterisation.
This discourse can be developed further by applying the theory to specific films or a particular category of films in Nollywood, from which a general conclusion can be made about whether the theory is applicable to our industry. There is a more technical approach that the article missed out on. This approach focuses on the mise en scene, mise en camera, and sound aspects. The application of semiotics, narratology, and psychoanalysis theories in film critique would further add value. The challenges and the solutions proffered by the article are very basic and there is a need to dig deeper into the minutiae of filmmaking in Nollywood to properly make a difference. The solutions proposed by the author are currently in use but have not been fully implemented, given the lack of structure in the industry, however, a proper model of addressing them would be to involve academics and practitioners. Practitioners will have an understanding of the internal workings of the industry, while the academics bring in theoretical expertise. It will also be helpful if practitioners take up roles in academia to help bridge the gap between theory and practical application in the industry. This will ensure that the industry develops the capacity to churn out better films. The article has not provided a clear solution to the issues that plague the Nollywood industry, rather it is an overview.
