The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), has warned that smuggled frozen food contain toxic substances that are dangerous to health.
NAFDAC Spokesperson, Abubakar Jimoh who disclosed this in a statement on Monday, in Abuja, warned Nigerians against consuming such food.
He said formalin is used to preserve such smuggled frozen poultry products such as chicken and turkey, and that it is capable of causing cancer.
“NAFDAC is alerting Nigerians about this practice. There are enough poultry products in the country than to resort to frozen chicken smuggled in, in spite of the Nigerian government’s ban,’’ he said.
He also said the growth of indigenous poultry farmers and marketers are negatively affected with such practices.
