Six passengers have been confirmed dead, while four others were rescued after a boat accident along the Nigerdock axis of the Igbologun Water Channel in Lagos State.
The incident occurred at about 8:35 p.m. on Tuesday and involved a commercial passenger boat travelling from the Ilashe Beach House, according to waterways authorities.
In a joint statement issued on Wednesday, the Head of the Public Affairs Unit of the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), Wuraola Alake, and the Head of the Corporate Affairs Unit of the Lagos Area Office of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Omowunmi Yussuff, confirmed the casualty figures.
The agencies said that upon receiving a distress alert, their search and rescue teams were immediately deployed to the scene. The operation was carried out in collaboration with the Marine Police and other first responders.
Rescue efforts, they added, were swift, leading to the recovery of four survivors, while search operations continued to account for others involved in the incident.
