Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, has said that shanties which have defaced the popular Marine Base Waterfront will not be allowed anymore.
Wike, disclosed this while speaking at the flag-off for the construction of a new Government House Jetty at Marine Base in Port Harcourt on Wednesday.
He said it is regrettable that the rich tourism opportunities, offered by the beautiful marine features around the area, have been destroyed by residents of shanties.
He also said residents had encroached on the land where the Government House facility is located, and that it took the gallant efforts of security personnel to evict them.
“Let us tell ourselves the truth. If I knew how this place is, I will not have agreed for this project to go on. Look at the shanties and you’re telling me that the Government House Jetty is where you’ll have Governor’s Lodge,” he said.
“If we have a place like this, do you know how many people will like to come to Rivers State? Today, we are talking about tourism, and how can you say that here should be a tourism centre when you have all these shanties around,” Wike added.
The Governor, warned that nobody will be allowed to use ethnicity to set the State backward, adding that he does not care about what anybody says.
