The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on President Bola Tinubu to stop the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, from executing a plan to shut down 34 foreign embassies in Abuja over unpaid ground rents.
In a statement issued on Monday, SERAP warned that closing diplomatic missions would breach international diplomatic norms, specifically citing Article 22 of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, which guarantees the protection and inviolability of diplomatic premises.
Wike recently threatened to revoke more than 4,700 land titles and seal off embassies and other properties that have failed to pay ground rents since 2014. According to the FCT Administration, foreign missions owe a combined total of over ₦3.6 billion.
