The Senate on Wednesday postponed deliberation on the report of the Electoral Act, 2022 (Repeal and Enactment) Bill, 2026, to allow for more extensive examination of the proposed amendments.
The decision was reached during plenary following discussions on the report of the Senate Committee on Electoral Matters, which was presented in the absence of its chairman, Senator Simon Lalong.
Lawmakers agreed to step down debate on the report, noting that senators require additional time to thoroughly study the provisions of the bill before arriving at a final decision. Consideration of the report has now been rescheduled for Thursday.
The Senate also resolved to reconvene in an executive session to facilitate closed-door deliberations on sensitive elements of the proposed electoral reforms, amid concerns over the far-reaching implications of the legislation.
