The Nigerian Senate was plunged into mourning on Thursday following the death of Senator Barinada Mpigi, the lawmaker representing Rivers South-East Senatorial District and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Works.
Sources say News of his passing reached the Senate chamber during budget defence proceedings, casting a somber mood over lawmakers.
Senator Mohammed Onawo, representing Nasarawa South, paid tribute to Mpigi during a session of the Senate Committee on Culture and Tourism, urging colleagues to honour his legacy. Lawmakers observed a minute’s silence in his memory.
“May his gentle soul rest in peace,” remarked Senator Ogoshi. Tributes also came from members of the House of Representatives, including Akin Alabi, Chairman of the House Committee on Works, who wrote on X: “Good night, my dear friend. Rest in Peace, Senator Mpigi Barinada. Sen Mpigi represented Rivers South East in the Senate.”
