The Nigerian Senate has approved the electronic transmission of election results, while allowing for manual collation as a contingency in the event of technical failures.
In a move amending the controversial Electoral Act, the Senate modified Clause 60 to mandate that presiding officers at each polling unit transmit results electronically to the Independent National Electoral Commission’s IREV portal.
Under the new provision, if electronic transmission fails due to network or communication issues, the manual result sheet (Form EC8A) will serve as the official source for collating results.
The decision, however, has drawn protests outside the National Assembly, with demonstrators opposing a dual system. They argue that any polling unit unable to transmit results electronically should have its election cancelled and rescheduled for the following
