The Nigerian Senate has approved a ₦1.48 trillion budget for Rivers State for the 2025 fiscal year. The approval followed the recommendations of the Senate ad-hoc committee responsible for overseeing the state’s emergency governance framework.
Alongside the budget passage, the Senate also confirmed a list of presidential nominees for key positions within the state. These include appointments to the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, the Civil Service Commission, the Local Government Service Commission, and the Primary Healthcare Management Board.
Debate ensued during the confirmation process over the nomination of Mr. Michael Odey, an indigene of Cross River State, as Chairman of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission. Despite concerns raised by some lawmakers, the Senate ruled that the appointment did not contravene any constitutional provisions.
