PORT HARCOURT — Suspected sea pirates on Monday abducted over 13 passengers from a commercial boat traveling along the Degema–Akuku-Toru waterways in Rivers State.
The vessel, which departed Bille in Degema Local Government Area, was heading to Port Harcourt when it was intercepted near the Cawthorne Channel in Akuku-Toru LGA. Armed assailants reportedly seized five of the six passengers and fled to an undisclosed location.
An elderly female passenger, said to be ill and en route to Port Harcourt for medical treatment, was spared by the attackers, according to local sources.
Confirming the incident, Executive Director of the Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre, Dr. Fyneface Dumnamene, stated that the woman was released due to her health condition. Authorities have yet to provide an official response.
