Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has gifted victims of election violence in the just concluded 2019 presidential election the sum of N450m. This is to serve as compensation for the victims in Abonnema community of Akuku-Toru Local Government Area of the state.
The governor represented by Dr Tammy Danagogo, the Secretary to the Rivers State Government met with the families of casualties and the council of chiefs at their town hall in Abonnema, today.
Danagogo assured the victims that their bank account numbers would be credited with the amount of money due them from Wednesday. There are reports that each may get as much as N9m.
These victims were alleged to have been attacked by soldiers deployed to the area to forestall the outbreak of crises during the presidential poll. The beneficiaries include those who lost their lives, sustained bullet wounds, lost valuable items and were arrested and detained by security agents. According to reports, over 37 persons were killed during the election, which saw President Buhari emerge as winner.
During the meeting, Amanyanabo of Abonnema, King Disreal Gbobo Bob-Manuel was urged to ensure that the beneficiaries were his people.
In his remark, King Bob-Manuel described Wike as a reliable and compassionate leader with the political will to fulfill his promises.
