Some residents along Rumuolumeni Road in Rivers State have accused officials of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) of demanding money before installing solar-powered streetlights in front of their homes.
The residents told our correspondent that the officials allegedly requested as much as ₦20,000 from each compound before mounting the lights. According to them, compounds that complied had holes drilled in front of their premises for the installations, while those who refused were excluded from the project.
Efforts to obtain a response from the NDDC on the allegation were unsuccessful as of press time.
The NDDC has been undertaking the installation of solar-powered streetlights across the Niger Delta region as part of its mandate to improve living conditions in host communities.
