The Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH), in partnership with CIPHER Paediatric HIV Matters, has organised a dissemination meeting to share findings from recent implementation research aimed at improving HIV care for children.
Titled “Optimising Paediatric Dolutegravir (PDTG) for Children Living with HIV: Outcome of a Training Programme for Healthcare Workers in Rural Communities in Rivers State, Nigeria,” the event took place on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, at RSUTH’s Institute of Development Unit.
The meeting brought together healthcare professionals, policymakers, and health sector partners to review the outcomes of a capacity-building programme designed to strengthen HIV treatment in rural areas. The research highlighted the benefits of training healthcare workers on the effective use of Paediatric Dolutegravir (PDTG), a highly effective and well-tolerated antiretroviral drug.
Findings showed that equipping rural healthcare staff with updated clinical knowledge and skills significantly enhances the quality of care and treatment outcomes for children living with HIV.
Speaking at the event, RSUTH Chief Medical Director, Professor Chizindu Alikor, reiterated the hospital’s dedication to improving child health and strengthening HIV management through evidence-based programmes and partnerships. He stressed that initiatives like OREH are crucial for addressing healthcare gaps, especially in underserved communities.
Representing the Rivers State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Adaeze Oreh, Dr. Vincent Nwachukwu praised the collaboration between RSUTH and CIPHER Paediatric HIV Matters. He noted that the state government remains committed to supporting innovative health programmes to ensure all children living with HIV receive optimal care, regardless of location.
The dissemination meeting provided a platform to share insights, lessons, and best practices that could shape future health policies and interventions in the fight against paediatric HIV.
