RSU Vice Chancellor Inaugurates New PGSA, SUG Officers

The Rivers State University Vice Chancellor, Professor Sunday Nlerum Okogbule has inaugurated new officers for the Post Graduate Students Association and Student Union Government for the 2022/23 Academic session on Monday, 30th January.

The students union community at Rivers State University has gotten new leadership as winners of the last SUG and PGSA elections for the Graduate Executive Council, Graduate Representative Council and the SUG Executive Council, Representative Council and Judicial Council were sworn in today. The oath of Allegiance and oath of office were administered by Dr Edwin Jonathan, Esq to the new PGSA/SUG officers. He urged them to discharge their duties to the best of their abilities and protect their union constitution always.

In her goodwill message, Hilda Dokubo urged the new executives to note that this is a citadel of learning and they must be conscious they are representatives of the new Nigeria everywhere dream of.

In his acceptance speech, the newly inaugurated PGSA President, David Nelson-Ordu, says their inauguration signifies an end and also a beginning, for change and consolidation. On behalf of other PGSA officers, he accepted the responsibilities bestowed on them.

On his part, the new SUG President, Miracle Anele said in his acceptance speech his govt would concentrate on human capital development, and welfare and would serve the union in all sincerity. He thanked all those who worked for his election victory

In his speech, the Chairman of the Rivers State House of Assembly Committee on Education, Hon. Christian Ahiakwo, wished them a successful tenure. He reminded the new officers that so much is expected from them and that the school Management can work and cooperate with them. He asked them to always lobby to get their demands.

The chairman of Occasion, Hon. Bright Amaewule congratulated everyone inaugurated today. He urged them to work in unity and avoid having rancorous relationships amongst themselves. He promised to continually support the Students Representative Council and Graduate Representative Council as the leader of the Rivers State House of Assembly in the 9th Assembly.

“I know you will need a lot of training, you have that open check to consult with us as a leader of the House of Assembly, and we will help you in whatever way you need,” he said.

In his inauguration speech, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Sunday Nlerum Okogbule said the election that brought in the new officers was free and fair, he congratulated everyone inaugurated and advise that they should adhere to the counsels of the previous speakers in adopting lobbying as a major tool in their interface with the management. He also said the university is now a university of choice in the country.

“...the number of students seeking admission to this school is so high, they are students in other universities seeking to transfer to this place. Even lecturers in other universities are begging to come here, this speaks to the fact that the university is a university of choice” he said.

He urged them to carry everybody along to avoid internal disagreements. He reminded them that the primary reason they are in school is to study and get a degree and they should take their studies seriously. The VC expressed displeasure over the failure of some students to recite the school anthem. He directed the DSA to disqualify any aspirant that can’t recite the school anthem in the next elections.

Earlier, the immediate past SUG President, Kelechi Omano recounted some of his administration’s achievements and said they were grateful for the opportunity given to them to serve the union and learn in the process in the past session.

The event was attended by Principal Officers of the University, some Rivers State House of Assembly members, the APC candidate for Emohua State Constituency, Dr Godstime Orlukwu, Parents of the new officers and some students too. There was a special dance presentation by the department of Theatre Arts Dance Group.
