The Rivers State University (RSU) on Thursday, hosted a delegation from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to explore areas of collaboration on climate change and environmental sustainability.
Speaking during the visit, the Vice-Chancellor of RSU, Prof. Isaac Zeb-Obipi, expressed gratitude to UNEP for choosing the university as a partner in advancing environmental research and sustainable development in the Niger Delta region. He reaffirmed RSU’s commitment to supporting initiatives that promote ecological balance and resilience.
Team Leader of the UNEP delegation, Ms. Mira Gratier, said the visit was aimed at assessing local climate challenges and evaluating policy impacts between 2025 and 2050. She emphasized the need for collaboration with the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) and local stakeholders to develop actionable recommendations for addressing environmental issues.
Director of the Advancement and Linkages Centre, Prof. Hudson Ukoima, underscored the importance of raising awareness about climate change, while the Acting Head of the Department of Environmental Management, Dr. (Mrs.) Augusta Ayotamuno, noted that environmental protection remains a collective responsibility.
