The Management of Rivers State University (RSU), Nkpolu-Oroworukwo, Port Harcourt, has debunked reports circulating on social media that all graduating students are required to pay ₦220,000 as a convocation fee.
In a statement issued on Friday by the Registrar, Mrs. I. B. S. Harry, the university explained that the ₦220,000 fee applies only to Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) graduands. She added that the fee covers the cost of the convocation gown, which PhD recipients retain after the ceremony.
According to the breakdown released by the institution, the approved convocation fees for the 37th and 38th combined Convocation Ceremony are as follows: Bachelor’s Degree — ₦97,000; Professional/Certificate Programmes — ₦68,000; Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) — ₦145,000; Master’s Degree — ₦145,000; and PhD — ₦220,000.
The management further noted that the charges are consistent with those of other institutions in the state and are in some cases lower than those of sister universities.
RSU urged graduating students, parents, and members of the public to disregard misleading information and rely strictly on official communications from the university.
