The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has clarified that it has not released a new timetable for the forthcoming local government elections.
Speaking to journalists, the Commissioner in charge of Political Parties Affairs, Monitoring, and Security, Godfrey Woke, said the commission is operating under the existing schedule issued by the former RSIEC Chairman, retired Justice Adolphus Enebele. This statement comes in response to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)’s recent advice regarding the mandatory 90-day notice to political parties before elections.
Woke noted that nearly all registered political parties have obtained expression of interest forms ahead of the July 31 deadline for submission. He added that only one party is experiencing a challenge and dismissed claims of any leadership faction within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.
Also addressing the matter, RSIEC Commissioner for Administration and Legal Matters, Professor Chidi Halliday, stated that the current commission is acting in line with applicable laws and is continuing the process initiated by the dissolved sixth commission.
