The Rivers State Government says it will continue to support the victims of the Orazi Gas Explosion.

Rivers State Deputy Governor Professor Ngozi Nma Odu stated this during her visit to the victims of the disaster at the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, 8th January 2024.

Accompanied by the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Adaeze Chidinma Oreh, Prof. Odu said they were at the hospital because the Governor Fubara Administration is a Government that cares for her people, stressing that the Government has been supporting them since the incident occurred.

“It is a very sad thing. It is a great disaster, but we will not fold our hands and watch people die; we must thank the Hospital, the Commissioner for Health, and the entire team; they have been working round the clock to ensure that they save lives,” she said.

She said although we have lost three, the medical team has been battling to ensure they save more lives, adding that those who could not open their eyes before are beginning to do so and have started talking again, which means there is a form of communication.

According to the Deputy Governor, the Health Commissioner would report to the Governor at the end of the visit to further support the hospital with medication and other supplies they are using to take care of the burns and also to see ways in which they can reduce the burden on the families that are affected.

“We will not fold our arms and turn our backs to the families that have been impacted negatively. God will help, and we will keep supporting them to make sure they are okay”. The Deputy Governor further stressed.

Prof Odu expressed gratitude to the State Chief Executive, Sir Siminalayi Fubara for his concern and support to the victims of the disaster, the State commissioner for Health, Dr. Adaeze Chidinma Oreh, the Chief Medical Director of the State University Teaching Hospital, Prof. Chizindu Alikor and their team for their commitment to duties, while commending members of the Jehovah’s Witnesses for their timely intervention in rescuing some of the victims.
