The Rivers State Government has reaffirmed its partnership with the Nigerian Navy, with Governor Siminalayi Fubara commending the military formation for its strong role in safeguarding maritime corridors and sustaining crude oil output across the state.
Governor Fubara gave the commendation on Friday when he received the 43rd Flag Officer Commanding, Eastern Naval Command, Rear Admiral Chiedozie Donald Okehie, at Government House, Port Harcourt.
He praised the Navy for its swift response to security threats, noting that its proactive actions continue to protect vital oil installations and maintain peace across riverine communities.
“In most cases, they act without delay. It is after the operation that they send their report,” he said, stressing that any disruption in crude oil production caused by vandalism would have far-reaching consequences for both the state and the country.
The Governor assured that his administration would sustain the robust relationship built with successive naval commands, describing maritime security as essential due to the state’s vast waterways and the livelihoods tied to them.
“Our relationship with the Naval Command has been very wonderful,” he added, expressing confidence that the visit would further cement cooperation.
In his remarks, Rear Admiral Okehie thanked the Governor for the state’s consistent support, particularly the provision of six gunboats and improvements at the Navy’s secondary school in Rivers State.
He described the state as a critical hub for maritime and energy activities, requiring constant protection and coordinated security operations.
The FOC pledged to intensify patrols, enhance maritime domain awareness, and deepen joint operations with other security agencies. He also reaffirmed the Navy’s commitment to supporting the state’s development agenda, including peace, security, economic growth, and protection of critical infrastructure.
Rear Admiral Okehie added that the Navy would remain a dependable partner in safeguarding waterways, promoting community safety, and contributing to youth empowerment and socio-economic stability.
