The Rivers State Government has expressed serious concern over rising cases of child trafficking, exploitation and other harmful practices affecting vulnerable individuals in the state.
This followed a meeting on Wednesday between the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Benibo Anabraba, and officials of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), led by Barr. Ikediashi Nwamaka, Assistant Director of Intelligence, Rivers State Command.
Dr. Anabraba commended NAPTIP for its work in safeguarding vulnerable groups but drew attention to reports of unwholesome practices in some orphanages and care homes, including child trafficking, exploitation of underaged girls—commonly associated with so-called “baby factories”—and unregulated surrogacy.
He assured that the government has initiated steps toward legislation aimed at regulating these activities and strengthening protection for women and children across the state.
The meeting formed part of ongoing efforts by the Fubara administration to ensure the welfare and safety of vulnerable persons in Rivers State.
