The Rivers State government in conjunction with the Management of Wigwe University, yesterday, announced the award of scholarship for one hundred (100) students offered provisional admission to study various courses in the university, as part of their support for the institution as it officially opens for academic and non-academic at its campus in Isiokpo.
Head of Press, Ministry of Education – Tochi Abinye pepple in a statement said, Gov. Sim Fubara made the announcement during the official opening ceremony of the University for 2024/2025 academic session held at the conference hall of the school in Isiokpo, Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State on Thursday.
He said 70 percent of the scholarship goes to indigenes while 30 percent is for non-indigenes residing in the state.
Represented by the Commissioner for Education Dr Ovy Chinedum Chukwuma, the Governor said commencement of the Wigwe University is a plus to the education sector in the state adding that the state will create the needed enabling environment for the school to strive and to attract students from all walks of life and also to enjoy Government attention and support.
The Commissioner advised the University management to maintain the vision of the founder of the university by operating according to stipulated standard to keep his legacy alive adding that with the state of the art facilities in place, the students will enjoy studying with ease.
“I want to encourage the management to make sure that the dreams of the founder does not die. The environment and standards in place should not be lowered”, he said while calling on the host community to support the university so that the vision of the founder will live forever,” he said.
