The Rivers State Ministry of Health has launched a health programme titled #Project10Million, a transformative campaign led by the Nigeria Governors’ Forum in collaboration with the Nigeria Health Commissioners Forum.
The State commissioner of Health, Adaeze Oreh in a statement said the aim is to Screen 10 million Nigerians for hypertension and diabetes, Identify and link all new cases to care, and reduce the growing burden of non-communicable diseases in our country.
According to her, non-communicable diseases, particularly hypertension and diabetes, have emerged as silent killers in our society
She said, they contribute to approximately 447,800 deaths annually in Nigeria, making up around 27% of all deaths. These diseases affect people from all works of life, and they often go undetected until serious complications arise.
She added that Project 10 Million seeks to break this cycle by promoting early detection and management, helping to prevent life-threatening complications, and saving lives.
‘This initiative provides a unique opportunity for our citizens and residents to know their numbers and take control of their health. By participating in this free screening, each resident will gain valuable insight into their health. Early detection allows individuals to make lifestyle changes, receive treatment and prevent severe complications such as stroke, heart disease, kidney failure and blindness. Thereby taking charge of their health and protecting their futures.
The project will be open daily for the next two weeks using the Local Government Area Council secretariats as the base of outreach operations.
I urge each of you to take advantage of this initiative. Don’t wait until symptoms arise. This is your chance to learn your health status and take proactive steps towards a healthier life. Encourage your family, friends and neighbors to participate as well. Let us all commit to making our state a healthier place to live.
I would also like to extend my gratitude to the Nigeria Governors Forum and the Nigeria Health Commissioners Forum for their leadership and vision in championing Project 10 Million. Your commitment to improving public health in Nigeria is truly commendable.
Additionally, a special thank you to the Institute of Human Virology Nigeria (IHVN) for your invaluable partnership over the years and support in implementing this project. Together we are making a statement that the health of Nigerians is a national priority.
Finally, this initiative is a testament to what we can achieve when we work together for a common goal. Let us unite in our efforts to reduce the burden of #NCDs in Rivers State and beyond. Together, we are paving the way for a healthier, stronger future for all Nigerians,” she said.
