The Rivers State Government has inaugurated a Technical Working Committee to strengthen campaigns against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in the state.
The committee, which draws membership from line ministries, the National Orientation Agency (NOA), security agencies, community-based organisations (CBOs), and UNICEF-supported NGOs, is tasked with coordinating efforts aimed at abolishing the practice.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation, Prof. Justina Jumbo, said the committee’s mandate is to drive initiatives that will lead to the complete eradication of FGM in the state.
Prof. Jumbo underscored the health and psychological dangers of FGM, stressing the importance of collective action by stakeholders to protect women and girls from the practice. She added that the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to safeguarding the rights and well-being of women and girls across Rivers State.
