IMPLEMENTATION OF THE NEW RETIREMENT AGE AND LENGTH OF SERVICE FOR TEACHERS IN RIVERS STATE
Following the authorization of the Harmonized Retirement Age for Teachers in Nigeria, ACT, 2022 by the Federal Government, I am pleased to convey the approval of His Excellency, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, GSSRS, for the implementation of the revised retirement age for Teachers from 60 to 65 years and length of service from 35 to 40 years, whichever comes earlier with effect from 23rd September, 2024.
2. Kindly note that the decision of the State Government to implement this policy is in line with the provisions of the Harmonized Retirement Age for Teachers in Nigeria ACT, 2022.
3. For clarity, non-teaching staff In the State Primary and Post Primary Schools and Education Boards shall continue to retire at sixty (60) years of age or thirty-five (35) years of service whichever comes earlier. The Harmonized Retirement Age is for the benefit of classroom teachers only.
4. Furthermore, this policy does not apply to teachers who had retired from the service before the effective date of this circular.
5. Officers who put in a 35 year period of service shall not be considered for promotion for the remaining years of their stay in service.
6. Beneficiaries must be professional Teachers registered with Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN).
7. Also note that retirement benefits will be computed based on sixty (60) years of age or thirty-five (35) years of service.
8. However, those who are not interested in the elongation scheme are required to apply for retirement from service in line with the existing Public Service Rules.
9. Consequent upon the above, all Heads of Boards and Educational Institutions are enjoined to bring the content of this circular to all staff, for their information and strict compliance.
