The Rivers State Government Flood Management Committee has called on residents of the 12 local government areas likely to suffer from flooding as predicted by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NiMET to take precautions as the more than normal rainfall could happen anytime.
The committee in a statement advised on residents of Abua Odual, Ahoada East, Ahoada West, Akuku-Toru, Andoni, Emohua, Ikwerre, Onelga, Okirika, Oyigbo and Opobo Nkoro councils to commence the cleaning of their environment and drainages to enable flow of water.
The committee called on residents to be prepared to move to higher grounds when they see water overflowing riverbanks to avoid deaths and mitigate loss of property.
It also directed flood committees to sensitize the people on what to do and work with local councils, traditional rulers and leaders to come up with measures to cushion the effect of flooding.
The committee noted that the unprecedented flood disaster in 2022 served as an eye opener thus, the state government is taking proactive steps to forestall any negative impact.
