PRESS STATEMENT
The Rivers State Waste Management Agency (RIWAMA) has issued a crucial call to action for residents of the state to prioritize sanitation, particularly in light of the serious public health risks posed by open defecation.
This message comes as the world observes World Toilet Day, which this year focuses on “Sanitation For Peace,” emphasizing the vital role of safe sanitation systems in promoting healthier, more equitable societies.
Helen Ohaka, Director and Head of Environmental Health and Operation at RIWAMA, warned that open defecation is a breeding ground for communicable diseases such as cholera, typhoid, and other waterborne illnesses.
To combat this issue, RIWAMA is taking a firm stance, announcing that offenders will face arrests and prosecutions through their mobile court system.
Under the leadership of Hon. Prince Obi Ohia, the agency is dedicated to raising awareness about the devastating impacts of poor sanitation practices.
Ohaka urged residents to maintain public hygiene by consistently keeping their toilets and environments clean, reinforcing the message that proper sanitation is essential for the health and well-being of individuals and the community.
