The Rivers State Waste Management Agency, RIWAMA, on Wednesday, arraigned over 18 offenders before the Magistrate at the Environmental Sanitation Court.
The agency said the 18 persons were charged for committing public nuisance by act of operating an illegal dumping site, an offence contrary to RIWAMA law under section 37/38 1a,b and 5(m) and punishable under section 39 of the public Health Law, Cap 106. Laws of Rivers State, 1999.
It said the appearance of these offenders before the Magistrate underscores the seriousness with which the agency views environmental cleanliness, adding that It serves as a reminder to all residents of their responsibility to contribute to a clean and hygienic environment.
RIWAMA, added that by enforcing these measures, Rivers State aims to foster a culture of environmental consciousness and collective responsibility among its citizens. Through compliance with sanitation laws, the state can continue to thrive as a clean and sustainable environment for generations to come.
