The Rivers State Youth Parliament (RSYP) has declared its full support for the ongoing impeachment proceedings against the Governor and Deputy Governor of Rivers State, citing gross misconduct and repeated breaches of peace agreements as key reasons for the action.
Speaker of the parliament, Hon. Wisdom Bruce in a statement described the impeachment process as “timely and necessary” for ensuring peace, stability, and democratic governance in the state.
The parliament highlighted persistent political tension, breakdowns of trust among critical stakeholders, and violations of peace accords brokered by national leaders, including the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as major concerns undermining stability in Rivers State.
“These repeated breaches are a grave affront to democratic norms, constitutional responsibility, and the authority of conflict-resolution mechanisms established to protect the peace and welfare of citizens,” the statement said. “Leadership at all levels must be anchored on accountability, respect for dialogue, and adherence to agreements reached through lawful and inclusive processes. Where these principles are persistently disregarded, constitutional remedies must be pursued without fear or favour.”
The Youth Parliament emphasised that impeachment is a constitutional democratic process designed to uphold the rule of law and protect public interest, rather than an act of vendetta. It also warned of the long-term consequences of prolonged political crises, including economic stagnation, loss of investor confidence, and diminished opportunities for young people.
The RSYP called on all relevant constitutional bodies to conduct the impeachment proceedings with transparency, fairness, and strict adherence to the law. It further urged stakeholders to act responsibly, avoiding actions that could escalate tensions or disrupt public order.
Concluding its statement, the Rivers State Youth Parliament reaffirmed its support for the impeachment proceedings, describing them as essential for maintaining accountability, upholding constitutional order, and promoting sustainable peace in Rivers State.
