A coalition of tenants and civil society organizations in Rivers State, operating under the banner of the Advisory Forum on Rent Control, has raised alarm over a dramatic surge in rental prices across the state, particularly in the capital, Port Harcourt.
The group reported that rents for various categories of accommodation have increased by over 150 percent within the past year, contributing to what they described as a worsening housing crisis. The sharp rise has forced many residents into overcrowded and substandard living conditions, they said.
Stakeholders noted that the gradual rent increase over the last six to twelve months has strained tenants financially, prompting a steady migration from central Port Harcourt and surrounding areas in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area to more affordable suburbs such as Igbo Etche and Obigbo.
In response, the Forum has been established to confront the growing housing challenge and advocate for rent control measures to alleviate the burden on residents.
