The Rivers State Chapter of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, has slammed the State Waste Management Agency over what it described as its inability to clear the streets of wastes.
Chairman of the association, Comrade, Bani Samuel Nwisabari in a statement today, also berated the agency for failing to provide receptacles for proper waste disposal.
He noted that the once respected and revered Garden City is turning to a Garbage city.
He also called on the State Governor to with immediate effect appoint Commissioners for Environment and Health as these ministries are saddled with the responsibilities of attending to issues of health and the environment.
Part of his statement reads,
Driving around the city today from Elekahia to Ada George to NTA road to Ikwerre road just to mention a few, you will agree with me that the once respected and revered Garden City is turning to a Garbage City.
Rivers people and residents are being made to suffer this environmental hazards on the basis of friendship. We hereby, implore the Governor Barr. Nyesom Wike to take decisive actions against his friend, Bro. Felix Obuah in charge of RIWAMA and stop the looming health hazards and further devastating state of our environment.
Consequently, as youth leadership in the State, we hereby demand the immediate appointment of the Commissioners for Environment and that of Health as these two ministries are directly saddled with responsibilities of attending to issues relating to the health and environment of the people of the State.
Furthermore we call on the Rivers State government to publish and implement the recommendation of the report of the former Commissioner of environment prof. Roseline konya. Led committee
