An optometrist in Rivers State, Stella Ojobo has called on residents to use protective glasses to reduce the effect of the soot on their eyes.
Ojobo, in a statement at the weekend said there have been complaints of swollen itching eyes in Port Harcourt.
She said the soot is to blame for the menace. When the particles come in contact with the eyes, cells begin to fight which results to hyper-sensitivity reaction.
She also advised residents to visit their doctors when they notice any irritation, for proper check-up and treatment if necessary.
Dr. Ojobo noted that it is an environmental factor and called on relevant authorities to take care of the soot which is detrimental to health.
