The Rivers State government has confirmed five cases of cholera and nine related deaths in an outbreak affecting Akuku-Toru and Andoni Local Government Areas.
Commissioner for Health, Dr. Adaeze Oreh, disclosed that all confirmed cases occurred in Akuku-Toru, while fatalities were reported in both LGAs.
She said to contain the outbreak, emergency response teams have been deployed to the affected areas, alongside intensified public sensitization campaigns to educate residents on preventive measures.
Dr. Oreh emphasized the need for strict hygiene practices and urged residents to report suspected cases promptly. Parents were also encouraged to cooperate with health teams addressing the crisis.
She advised to maintain proper sanitation, drink safe water, and seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting, or dehydration.
Oreh reiterated the commitment of the state government to protecting public health and promised regular updates as the situation develops.
