Rivers State has strengthened its healthcare capacity with the commissioning of a new Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) Medical Oxygen Plant at the Bori Zonal Hospital.
The facility, donated by the Global Fund and coordinated through the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), can produce up to 60,000 litres of medical oxygen daily. The plant is expected to ensure steady oxygen supply to hospitals, reduce patient referrals, and help lower mortality rates across the state.
A delegation from the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, led by Mrs. Godwin Nina of the Oxygen Desk, attended the commissioning ceremony and commended the state government for prioritizing healthcare delivery.
“This plant is one of 63 donated by the Global Fund through NACA to the Federal Ministry of Health, and distributed across tertiary and secondary health institutions nationwide,” Mrs. Nina said. She added that Rivers State received two plants, with the second scheduled for commissioning in Degema before the end of the week.
The Rivers State Commissioner for Health expressed appreciation to the Global Fund, NACA, and the Federal Ministry of Health, reaffirming the government’s commitment to ensuring the plant operates at full capacity for the benefit of residents.
The new facility forms part of the state’s broader strategy to expand access to medical oxygen and improve service delivery, accountability, and patient-centred care across its health sector.
