Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has strengthened the state’s firefighting capability with the inauguration of a modernized fire service headquarters in Port Harcourt.
Speaking at the commissioning of the facility, located near Isaac Boro Park Flyover, Governor Fubara emphasized that the new infrastructure—equipped with state-of-the-art machinery and fire trucks—will significantly improve emergency response and reduce fire-related losses in the state.
He recalled past incidents, including the destruction of Mile One and Fruit Garden markets due to inadequate fire services, and stressed that the new investments would prevent such tragedies. He cited a recent tanker accident in Woji-Elelenwo, where the state’s fire service successfully intervened, marking a shift from past reliance on multinational companies for emergency response.
Governor Fubara reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to providing essential social services, enhancing public safety, and delivering infrastructure projects that directly benefit Rivers residents. He urged those in charge of the new facilities to ensure proper maintenance for sustained efficiency.
The Commissioner for Special Duties, Dr. Samuel Anya, highlighted that this was the first major upgrade to the state’s fire service since its establishment in the 1960s. The remodeled facility now includes a gym, a sick bay, offices, and new firefighting equipment, marking a significant step in the state’s emergency preparedness.
