The Rivers State Interprofessional Anti-Quackery Committee has shut down six unauthorized health facilities across the state and arrested two individuals in connection with illegal medical practice.
In a statement signed by Dr. Hope Ovundah, the committee said the operation was led by Dr. Vincent Wachukwu and Dr. Diamond Tamunokuro. Among the facilities closed was Bristol Clinic and Maternity in Rumuodomaya, a three-bedroom apartment converted into a six-bed hospital. Investigators found that the clinic was operated by Mr. Kingsley Ugwu, who impersonated a doctor and provided maternity and surgical services without any medical qualifications. Mr. Ugwu was arrested for quackery and impersonation.
The committee also sealed Adoration Hospital & Maternity in Omagwa, a three-room shop operating as a hospital. The facility was reportedly staffed by a one-month post-internship doctor and ten auxiliary trainees. Both the young doctor and the facility’s proprietor have been summoned to the Ministry of Health and the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) Disciplinary Panel for further investigation.
