Residents of Rivers State have taken to social media to express displeasure over the recent painting and branding of some flyovers in Port Harcourt, particularly the Location Junction flyover along NTA Road, which many say bears colours associated with a popular beer brand.
The development has sparked widespread criticism, with residents describing the design as inappropriate, annoying and a misrepresentation of the state’s identity.
Reacting to the development, a social media user, Precious Onuchuku, described the painting of the Location Junction flyover as “so annoying,” while another resident, Godgift Chigozi C. Ishiaya, simply wrote, “I swear location flyover,” echoing the frustration shared by many others.
Some commenters expressed concern that the colour scheme makes Rivers State appear to be promoting alcohol brands. Wisdom Luke remarked jokingly that “Rivers State wan turn to beer and hero State,” a comment that drew laughter reactions but underscored public disapproval.
Others took a more critical tone, questioning the state government’s role in approving such designs. Godgift Chigozi C. Ishiaya sarcastically commented, “Well, since we do not have a Governor in the State, let hero rule,” while Bright Obi asked, “Do we have a Gov in River State?”
Residents also pointed out that the colours do not reflect the official identity of the state. Caleb Orlu stressed that “our colour is blue and white,” calling for designs that align with Rivers State’s official colours and cultural image.
Another resident, Lucky Osilem, described the flyover painting as “very ugly,” summing up the dissatisfaction shared by several commenters.
As reactions continue to pour in, many residents are calling on the relevant authorities to review the design choices for public infrastructure and ensure that state assets reflect the cultural values, official symbols, and the collective identity of Rivers State, rather than corporate branding.
