The Rivers State Ministry of Health says about 1,319 cases of violence against women were reported and received supportive healthcare in their various facilities in 2024 alone.
The state commissioner of Health, Adaeze Oreh made this known in a statement on Monday, to mark this year’s International Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women and the first day of the 16 days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence.
According to her, each year, the campaign provides an opportunity to, Raise Awareness, Educate and Push for meaningful change to end gender-based violence
Part of her statement read, “This year’s theme highlights two key priorities – strengthening unity and increasing investments in prevention programmes. These efforts are essential for creating safe and supportive environments for everyone – especially women and girls – to thrive.
The theme is a call to action for all sectors of society – from government and healthcare to schools and businesses, we all have a role to play. This includes educating ourselves, challenging harmful behaviour and investing in programmes that empower and protect everyone against gender-based violence.
Violence is preventable but it requires sustained investment – both financial and social investment. By working together and committing resources to prevention, we can create communities that are safer and healthier for everyone.
The Rivers State government through the Ministry of Health has trained personnel in health facilities in all the 23 Local Government Areas to recognize and respond sensitively to cases of sexual and gender-based violence.
Therefore, I enjoin everyone to report cases to the nearest health facility for prompt action. It is important to know that healthcare providers are often the first point of contact for survivors.
I would encourage everyone listening to be proactive, Educate yourselves and your families about sexual and gender-based violence.
Speak up against harmful behaviour. Support the Rivers State government and other organisations that respond to survivors.
By challenging these behaviours and modelling respect in our own lives, we can influence those around us.
Every action counts and together, we can make a difference. Let us unite, invest and act to prevent gender-based violence. Change starts with each one of us and together, we are unstoppable.
The ‘16 Days of Campaigns Against Gender-Based Violence’ is observed annually around the world. This year’s theme, “Unite: Invest to Prevent Violence Against Women and Girls”, calls for action, investment and unity in preventing this devastating violence that affects millions globally.
