The Rivers State Police Command has launched an investigation into allegations of assault on journalists by police officers during a recent protest in Port Harcourt. The incident, which drew condemnation from the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), has prompted swift action by the Command.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Police Public Relations Officer SP Grace Iringe-Koko confirmed that some officers implicated in the incident have been identified and are currently being questioned as part of the inquiry.
While the Command acknowledged it had deployed personnel to the scene to ensure security and prevent any breakdown of law and order, it distanced itself from any unprofessional behavior by its officers.
“The Command unequivocally condemns this unfortunate incident,” Iringe-Koko said. “We value our longstanding relationship with the NUJ and deeply regret any actions that may have strained this bond.”
The statement reaffirmed the police’s respect for journalists and emphasized the importance of press freedom in maintaining peace and development. It also assured the public and the NUJ that the outcome of the investigation will be made public and appropriate measures will be taken.
The Rivers Police reiterated their commitment to professionalism and human rights, promising zero tolerance for misconduct within the force.
