The Rivers State Police Command has commenced a full-scale investigation into the death of a University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) student, identified as Godson Akpakpan. The development was disclosed in an official statement issued by the spokesperson of the Command, Grace Iringe-Koko.
According to the police, preliminary findings indicate that Akpakpan was not in police custody at the time of his death, contrary to rumours circulating on social media and in some local reports. Iringe-Koko categorically refuted these claims, stating that the student was hit by a stray bullet during a confrontation involving military personnel. He was later confirmed dead at the hospital where he was rushed for medical attention.
The police have assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway to determine the exact circumstances that led to the tragic incident. The Command further called for calm, urging members of the public to avoid spreading misinformation that could incite unrest or hinder the investigative process.
While details remain sketchy, the involvement of military personnel has raised concerns, and the police say they are collaborating with relevant authorities to establish accountability and ensure that justice is served.
