The Rivers State Police Command has dismissed reports that some officers of the Anti-kidnapping unit accused of assaulting a motorist, Emmanuel Cletus Onyekachi, over tinted glasses have been dismissed from service.
A viral video had shown Onyekachi being brutalised and injured by the officers, sparking outrage and claims on social media that the personnel had already been sacked.
In a statement on Thursday, the command’s spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, clarified that the officers remain in custody on the orders of the Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, pending the outcome of disciplinary proceedings.
She noted that Adepoju strongly condemned the act after viewing the video and assured that the matter would not be swept under the carpet.
Iringe-Koko stressed that the erring officers would face appropriate sanctions, adding that the command remains committed to rooting out misconduct within its ranks.
