The Rivers State Police Command have confirmed that three persons, including a man and his daughter, were feared dead in a road crash that occurred in the early hours of New Year’s Day at the Obiri-Kwerre flyover in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State.
The accident involved a saloon car that reportedly rammed into a stationary waste collection truck parked along the flyover. The occupants of the vehicle were said to be returning from a crossover service when the crash occurred.
Confirming the incident, the Rivers State Police Command spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, a Chief Superintendent of Police, said an investigation was ongoing to ascertain the cause of the accident.
“Yes, I can confirm the incident. Their vehicle rammed into a stationary truck. Our hearts go out to the victims. However, an investigation is ongoing to ascertain the details of what happened,” Iringe-Koko said.
It was gathered that three occupants of the vehicle lost their lives, while others sustained serious injuries and are currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.
A brother of one of the deceased, Engr. Ajiboye Amaho, blamed the incident on the alleged indiscriminate parking of the waste collection truck without any warning signs. He described the crash as unfortunate and called on the government to curb what he described as increasing negligence by drivers.
Amaho identified the deceased as Ahmed, Aziz and Sheilla, adding that the accident could have been avoided if proper cautionary measures had been put in place.
