The Rivers State Police Command has presented cheques worth millions of naira to families of deceased police officers as part of activities marking the National Police Day celebration.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, who led the exercise in collaboration with Police Insurance, said the initiative was approved by the Inspector General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, to honour fallen heroes and support their families.
He explained that the gesture was aimed at easing the burdens faced by the families, while assuring them that the sacrifices of their loved ones would not be forgotten.
CP Adepoju urged beneficiaries to use the funds wisely to cater to their needs and warned them to be cautious of fraudsters.
He further commended the IGP for the initiative and expressed optimism that more welfare programmes would be introduced for families of late officers.
Some beneficiaries, including Micah Sunday Usoro, expressed appreciation for the support, describing it as a welcome and unexpected gesture.
Another beneficiary, Onyeyichi Lamidi, also thanked the police authorities and promised to make judicious use of the funds.
