The Rivers State Police Command has arrested a 41-year-old pastor, Ifediorah Onyeibor Joseph, over the alleged dehumanisation of minors during a church programme in the state.
Police spokesperson SP Grace Iringe-Koko, in a statement on Wednesday, said the arrest followed a viral video circulating on social media showing minors being subjected to inhumane treatment in a church setting.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the pastor allegedly organised a three-day programme for children in his church, claiming it was for “spiritual cleaning” inspired by the Holy Spirit. Acting on intelligence, operatives of the Command stormed the church, arresting the pastor and several members while rescuing the victims.
The Rivers State Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga A. Adepoju, assured the public that a thorough investigation was underway to unravel the circumstances of the incident. He urged residents to remain calm and report suspicious activities to the nearest police station or security agency.
Adepoju reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to protecting vulnerable groups, especially minors, and ensuring that the dignity and safety of all citizens in the state are upheld.
