The Rivers State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly criticized the Supreme Court’s recent judgment on the state’s political crisis, asserting that the ruling contained errors. Speaking at a press conference in Port Harcourt on Tuesday, the State Working Committee, led by High Chief Nname Robinson Ewor, reaffirmed its support for Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his implementation of the court’s directives.
While acknowledging the finality of the Supreme Court’s decisions, the PDP insisted that the dissolution of the 23 Local Government Councils and the scheduling of elections for August 9, 2025, were necessary steps. It also highlighted the governor’s attempts to re-present the 2025 budget, despite resistance from the House of Assembly.
The party rejected the court’s decision to void the 2024 local government elections based on the Electoral Act, arguing that local elections fall under state laws. It also disputed the court’s stance on the defection of 27 lawmakers, asserting that evidence—including sworn affidavits and public declarations—proved they had left the PDP for the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Condemning alleged impeachment moves against Governor Fubara, the PDP accused Assembly Speaker Martins Amaewhule and his faction of dishonoring the Supreme Court’s judgment by pursuing political instability instead of governance.
The party urged the governor to proceed with the court’s directives, including re-presenting the budget on March 19, while calling on the Assembly to cooperate. It also appealed to President Bola Tinubu to ensure Rivers State receives its federal allocation, warning that withholding funds could trigger unrest.
The PDP concluded by urging all stakeholders, including former Governor and current FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, to work towards peace and stability in the state.
