The Rivers State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has thrown its weight behind the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (NUPENG) as the union begins a nationwide strike.
State NLC Chairman, Alex Agwanwor, said on Monday that the action is aimed at forcing the federal government to resolve lingering disputes in the oil and gas sector and improve workers’ welfare. He noted that the NLC would track compliance among its members, adding that the Trade Union Act gives NUPENG exclusive authority to unionise industry workers.
In Port Harcourt, NUPENG representative at the refinery, Uche Udenwa, explained that the strike would end once the government addresses the union’s concerns. He said enforcement in the city was focused largely on private depots.
