Abuja, Nigeria – Members of the Rivers State Caucus in the House of Representatives have dismissed claims by the Hon. Martin Amaewhule-led Assembly accusing them of misleading the public regarding recent judicial rulings affecting the Rivers State House of Assembly.
In a press statement, the lawmakers clarified that Amaewhule and 26 others lost their seats on December 11, 2023, when they defected from their party. Citing Supreme Court rulings, they emphasized that defection leads to automatic loss of legislative seats under Nigerian law.
They further argued that the January 22, 2024, judgment by Justice J.K. Omotosho did not address the status of the defected lawmakers, contrary to claims by Amaewhule’s group. The caucus urged President Bola Tinubu, the judiciary, and the Nigerian public to disregard the “deliberate misrepresentation” of facts.
Governor Siminalayi Fubara, they affirmed, remains committed to upholding the rule of law in Rivers State.
