Some members of the Rivers State House of Assembly who had earlier called for a halt to the impeachment process against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy have announced that they will now proceed with the action.
The lawmakers—Hon. Emilia Amadi, Hon. Sylvanus Nwankwo and Hon. Peter Abbey—made their position known during a press briefing held in Port Harcourt on Thursday.
According to them, the decision to resume the impeachment process followed the governor’s alleged failure to “retrace his steps,” accusing him of actions they claimed were contrary to the provisions of the Constitution.
Speaking at the briefing, Hon. Major Jack also confirmed that the lawmakers were moving forward with the impeachment process. He said the Assembly had a responsibility to uphold constitutional order.
In the same vein, Linda Somiari Stewart and Hon. Adokiye Smart declared their support for the impeachment move, stressing that the action falls within the constitutional duties of lawmakers.
Other lawmakers maintained that the impeachment process, though serious, is a legitimate legislative tool provided by the Constitution and insisted that their actions were guided by the rule of law.
