Lawmakers in Rivers State have criticized Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s directive for Heads of Local Government Administration (HLGAs) to oversee the state’s 23 local councils, describing the move as illegal.
House of Assembly Speaker Martin Amaewhule condemned the directive, arguing that it violates the Supreme Court’s ruling and existing laws governing local government administration.
The legislators cited the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the Rivers State Local Government (Amendment) Law of 2023, and the Supreme Court judgment in Suit No. SC/CV/343/2024, which prohibits the management of local governments by HLGAs or any unelected officials.
