The Rivers State Government has called on journalists to strengthen their role as intermediaries between the government and the public by ensuring accurate and impactful reporting on policies, projects, programmes, and achievements across the state.
Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr. Benibo Anabraba, made the appeal on Wednesday during a courtesy visit by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Rivers State Council, led by Chairman, Mr. Paul Bazia-Nsaneh, at his office in Port Harcourt.
Dr. Anabraba noted that journalists, as the fourth estate of the realm, play a critical role in shaping public opinion and enhancing democratic governance. He said the media provides a platform for constructive criticism, accountability, and feedback that enables government to understand citizens’ perception of its actions.
“As a government, we appreciate the fact that you are our partners in conveying policies and activities to the people for their consumption, appreciation, and review,” he stated. “We urge you to continue publicising matters of importance in governance and encourage civic participation, particularly on issues such as civil rights, voter registration, and actions against gender-based violence.”
He further charged the media to promote morality, professionalism, and balanced criticism in their reportage.
Responding, NUJ Chairman, Mr. Bazia-Nsaneh, commended the State Government for its support to journalists and reaffirmed the union’s commitment to development-driven communication. He said the NUJ has outlined key strategic initiatives aimed at showcasing investment opportunities and promoting Rivers State’s image.
“If we don’t highlight the opportunities available in Rivers State, we may not attract the right interests or investments. We intend to change the narrative through a development communication approach,” he added.
The visit featured discussions on stronger collaboration to enhance information flow between government and citizens.
