The Rivers State Government has launched a health insurance scheme for inmates across correctional facilities in the state, aimed at expanding access to quality healthcare.
The initiative, introduced at the Port Harcourt Correctional Center by the Ministry of Health and the Rivers State Contributory Health Protection Programme (RIVCHPP), includes tuberculosis screening, malaria testing, chest examinations, and surgical referrals.
Executive Secretary of RIVCHPP, Dr. Vetty Agala, said the move demonstrates the state’s commitment to universal health coverage. “Access to healthcare is a right. This ensures vulnerable groups, including inmates, are not left behind,” she stated.
Controller of Corrections, Felix Madumere, described the scheme as a relief, noting that over 2,500 inmates will benefit from improved access to medical care.
A major highlight of the event was the launch of a screening machine, with inmates undergoing tests during the ceremony.
